Allopurinol is not an analgesic, anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and glucocorticoids are used to treat the severity of acute symptoms, i.e. an attack of pain. Allopurinol is a medicine used to treat the symptoms of diseases that result from excessive production and deposition of urates and/or uric acid in tissues and organs. Stabilizing the proper level of uric acid can take up to several weeks and this is a preventive measure to prevent possible attacks. The drug is quickly absorbed, because about 30-60 min is already present in plasma.
