Can Sumamed capsules be opened and mixed with water?

Good morning, The son received a prescription for Sumamed 250mg in the form of a tablet for suspension. In the pharmacy I was sold capsules sumamed 250mg saying that I could dissolve and drink them, but I was not given in what amount of liquid. The leaflet states that the hard capsules should be swallowed and should not be used in children weighing less than 45 kg. The son weighs 34 kg. In such a situation, can I give my son this medicine at all, or how to make a suspension?

Good morning, the pediatrician actually issued another prescription, this time for a suspension. Unfortunately, I am shocked that in the pharmacy I was still told that I could open the capsule and administer the medicine in this way, and the weight of the child did not matter to them at all. Thank you for your reply 🌼

Sumamed 250 mg capsules should be administered whole. The capsules should not be opened. Due to the bitter taste of the antibiotic, an attempt to make a suspension by mixing the contents with water is likely to fail. Sumamed 250 tablets for suspension and Sumamed 250 capsules contain the same dose. The dosage should therefore be the same as for the originally prescribed drug. If the doctor has prescribed the use of 1 tablet for suspension per day, then similarly 1 capsule should be administered every 24 hours. The usual recommended dose of Sumamed in children is 10 mg/kg per day, given in a single dose once a day for 3 consecutive days. In this case, it would be 340 mg 1 time per day for 3 days. This dose cannot be obtained by using the drug in the form of capsules or tablets for oral suspension. For this reason, in order to be able to precisely adjust the dose to the child's body weight, Sumamed is most often used in the form of a suspension in children. Please note, however, that the doctor, based on his own knowledge and experience, may recommend dosages other than those usually recommended. In summary, if your child is able to swallow the capsule whole, administer the medicine according to the dosage prescribed by your doctor. If it is impossible to swallow the capsule whole, reach for the preparation in the form of tablets or powder for suspension.
