If the use of tablets has been started on the 1st day of the period, you use the doses regularly, at similar times each day and you do not skip any of the doses - you are protected from pregnancy immediately, without the need for an additional method of contraception. However, please remember that none of the methods gives 100% effectiveness, so in the case described by you there is always some percentage chance that intercourse ending in ejaculation in the partner will result in pregnancy.
