Przenoszenie nużeńca odbywa się drogą bezpośrednich kontaktów z zakażonym oraz za pośrednictwem przedmiotów codziennego użytku. Jaja nużeńca mogą być także roznoszone z cząsteczkami kurzu. Ocena ryzyka zakażenia w opisanej sytuacji jest trudna.

Generalnie zarazić się jest łatwo, ale większe ryzyko przynoszą kontakty bardzo bliskie (np. otarcie policzkami podczas powitania, stosunek seksualny). Jednocześnie szacuje się, że wielu dorosłych ma na skórze nużeńce (jest nosicielami), jednak tylko w części przypadków choroba ma bogato objawowy przebieg.
