Bezpośrednio po miesiączce na ogół występuje brak śluzu lub odczuwalna jest tylko lekka wilgotność w pochwie, a sam śluz jest skąpy, gęsty i kleisty. Śluz tak zwany płodny jest rzadki, przejrzysty, rozciągliwy i występuje w zwiększonej ilości podczas owulacji. Śluz przed okresem (czyli w drugiej fazie cyklu - pomiędzy owulacją, a krwawieniem) jest znowu bardziej gęsty i mniej przejrzysty, raczej lepki i jest go mniej niż w czasie owulacji. Niektóre kobiety tuż przed miesiączką odczuwają wręcz suchość pochwy.
