The active substance in Xyvelam is levofloxacin, a synthetic antibacterial medicine from the fluoroquinolone group. The drug is indicated for use in adults to treat infections such as:

- acute pyelonephritis and complicated urinary tract infections,

- chronic bacterial prostatitis,

- pulmonary form of anthrax (prevention of infections after contact with bacteria and treatment).

It may also be used for the following infections where the use of other antibacterial medicines commonly recommended for the treatment of these infections is considered inappropriate:

- acute bacterial sinusitis,

- acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including bronchitis,

- extra-hospital pneumonia,

- complicated infections of the skin and soft tissues,

- uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

It is a prescription-only medication that should be used as directed by your doctor. The dosage of the drug varies depending on the indication for use.
