Ciproxacin (the active ingredient in Cipronex) is best taken within the first 24 hours after contact with a patient with invasive meningococcal disease. It is also possible to start treatment within 7 days of contact. After 14 days, treatment ceases to be justified, since the development of the disease is most likely soon after infection. The so-called chemoprophylaxis after contact with the patient is aimed at eliminating the potential carrier of N. meningitidis bacteria in the nasal part of the throat. The use of ciprofloxacin reduces the risk of tissue invasion and the spread of meningococcus.
