On Saturday I drank soda and choked. I spat out some of the liquid, but for a few minutes I had a cough. Later it was ok. However, after this incident I feel like I have phlegm in my throat and every now and then I try to cough it up. Because of the brute cough I feel a slight stinging in the cage, but I do not feel it all the time. Could this cough be due to throat irritation or is it something more serious?

Perhaps a small amount of fluid got into the respiratory tract. Chest pain may be associated with frequent coughing, which is a natural defensive reaction and may appear until the fluid is removed. If the cough or chest pain gets worse, shortness of breath appears, etc. - Consult your doctor.
