While the golden algae themselves are not dangerous to humans, dead aquatic organisms decomposing in the river and substances from the mine still present in it can cause secondary contamination, cyanobacterial bloom, the development of various bacteria, etc. so I would strongly advise against close contact with the water of the Oder for the time being. Ichthyotoxin produced by golden algae kills only gill-breathing organisms. The toxin changes the permeability of cell membranes and damages the gills. There is no data indicating ichthyotoxin toxicity to mammals and fish-eating birds. Primnezine (ichthyotoxin produced by golden algae) decomposes in the acidic environment of the stomach and does not penetrate the skin. However, experts advise against eating fish killed by toxins.
