Good morning
My child (3 years old, 14 kg) was given ephedrine powders by the doctor with the following ingredients:
Ephetonini 0.005 g
Calcii lactas pentahydricus 0.3 g
M.f. pulv.d.t.d.N*40
D.S. 2x1
Two Hundred Milligrams of Ephetonini
Dosage: 2x1 for 10 days, then 10 days off, then 2x1 again for 10 days.
Isn't 10 mg of ephedrine a day too much for such a young child? I'm asking because I've read somewhere that the maximum dose for this age and weight is 6 mg, but I don't know if this source is reliable.
Thank you for your reply.

The maximum daily doses of the substance for children are calculated on the basis of formulas. One of them is Clark's formula, which takes into account the child's body weight.
Child's daily dose (Dd) = (max. adult dose * child's body weight)/70
In this case, Dd = (150mg * 14kg)/70 Dd=30mg. Therefore, a daily dose of 10mg is not too high.
The maximum daily dose of ephedrine hydrochloride for an adult according to Pharmacopoeia XII is 150 mg.
