Tianeptine is an antidepressant that acts on several levels. It has an unusual mechanism of action, because m.in. increases the reuptake (transport from the intercellular space to the inside of nerve cells) of serotonin in specific areas of the central nervous system. It increases neuronal activity, improving brain plasticity. In addition, it increases dopamine metabolism in the brain, and the effect of this mechanism on the clinical efficacy of the drug is unknown. This mechanism can modulate dopamine activity in the central nervous system.
