These drugs should be used very carefully under strict medical supervision. Concomitant use of benzodiazepines (e.g., Afobam) with barbiturates (e.g., Bellergot) may lead to summation of the depressive effect of these drugs on the cns central nervous system. This can be manifested by excessive calming, drowsiness and slowing down the reaction. In addition, in separate studies, the stimulating effect of phenobarbital on metabolism and a decrease in serum alprazolam concentrations was described. The patient should be monitored for increased CNS effects (e.g. increased somnolence) with concomitant use. In the case of such a combination, driving vehicles and performing other activities requiring increased psychomotor activity should also be avoided.
