The correct value of saturation, i.e. saturation of hemoglobin with oxygen, is 95-99%, while in older people (over 70 years of age) results in the range of 94-98% are acceptable. A result between 91-95% requires checking the patient's state of health. Definitely abnormal values are below 90%, they can signal hypoxia caused, for example, by deterioration of lung ventilation. Below 85%, cyanosis may appear (bluish coloration on the lips, tongue, in the mouth). Low saturation can occur in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, anemia, pneumonia or heart disease. Any alarming result should be consulted with a doctor. Particular attention should be paid to whether the reduced value of blood oxygenation is not accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, impaired speech, coordination, vision, consciousness or acceleration of breathing. However, even without such pronounced symptoms, chronic hypoxia can be dangerous. Please note whether you are taking the measurement correctly. The results will disturb m.in nail polish, nail damage or lesions, very cold hands, hand movements during the examination, examination in a non-sitting position.
