Why does sphenoid sinusitis need to be treated with an intravenous antibiotic? I see such information everywhere, and a few years ago I was treated for this inflammation with a regular oral antibiotic at home (inflammation found on a CT scan of the head with contrast). I ask because I have similar headaches and sinus problems again as then. Is an oral antibiotic not enough?

The use of intravenous antibiotic therapy in the treatment of acute sphenoiditis is aimed at increasing the effectiveness and shortening the time of treatment, and thus increasing the chance of avoiding the need for surgery and reducing the risk of serious complications (m.in. meningitis, optic neuritis). Due to the fact that the sphenoid sinuses are the deepest located sinuses inside the craniofacial region, it is difficult to cure infections in this location. In addition, given the relatively poor penetration of antibiotics into sinus tissues, intravenous treatment is considered the most effective in this situation. Intravenous use of antibiotics mainly concerns cases of acute sphenoid sinusitis, which must be confirmed by a specialist. Imaging techniques (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) are used to determine sphenoiditis, in addition to the patient's interview and physical examination. Each time the doctor decides about the safest and most effective treatment regimen individually after the diagnostic process.
