Amitryptylina należy do leków przeciwdepresyjnych, ma działanie uspakajające i przeciwlękowe. Preparat zaczyna działać po kilkunastu dniach stosowania (najczęściej po około 2 tygodniach, ale u niektórych osób pierwsze efekty mogą się pojawić dopiero po miesiącu), jednak w zależności od schorzenia, lekarz może stopniowo zwiększać dawkę aż do uzyskania pełnej skuteczności leczenia.
