Why do thyroid diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism) often coexist with mental illnesses?

As far as I know, thyroid diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism) often coexist with mental illnesses. Am I well versed? If so, why is that? And I do not mean people who, for example, depression comes from hypothyroidism, I mean more people in whom mental illness is one thing, and thyroid disease is another

Thyroid diseases such as hypothyroidism can affect the functioning of the nervous system and brain, which can lead to psychiatric symptoms such as chronic fatigue, depressive symptoms, memory disorders and anxiety disorders. In the case of hypothyroidism, it is very common to: decreased sex drive, excessive sleepiness, memory impairment and impaired concentration. In turn, in people with hyperthyroidism, common neuropsychiatric symptoms are irritability, insomnia or restlessness. In both cases, patients often complain of symptoms such as depression, chronic fatigue, reduced interest and cognitive impairment. However, it is worth remembering that the relationship between thyroid disease and mental illness is complicated and complex. This means that not every person suffering from thyroid disorders who feels mentally unwell, the thyroid gland is the only culprit of such a condition. In the absence of improvement, despite the hormonal stabilization of the thyroid gland, it is necessary to expand the diagnosis with the possible co-occurrence of mental disorders. On the other hand, it is good when patients presenting to the doctor with symptoms similar to depression or affective disorders are also diagnosed for thyroid abnormalities. Accurate diagnostics are crucial in taking appropriate intervention to improve health and quality of life.
