Budesonide - the active substance in Budixon Neb - is excreted in the milk of breastfeeding women. However, when using therapeutic doses of budesonide, no effect of such treatment on a breastfed baby is anticipated. Budesonide can be used by breastfeeding women. Treatment with budesonide inhalation (200 or 400 μg twice daily) in women with breastfeeding asthma resulted in insignificant systemic exposure to budesonide in breastfed children. The estimated daily dose in infants was 0.3% of the daily maternal dose for both doses used, and the mean plasma concentration in infants was estimated to be 1/600th of the concentration observed in maternal plasma Based on data on budesonide used inhaled at the recommended intervals between therapeutic doses, whether intranasal, inhalation, oral or rectal administration, it is predicted, that the exposure of breastfed children to budesonide used in therapeutic doses is low.
